To start using the Galaxy Zoo iPhone app, first create a Galaxy Zoo Zooniverse account. This step is not mandatory but your classifications will be ignored and all your work wasted without it.
Once you have created your account you can log into the iPhone application by typing your username and password in the fields. If you later want to log out, tap the info button in the top left of the screen and then tap "Logout". If you do not logout then the app will save your login details and automatically log you in next time you start it.
After a short delay while images are downloaded you will be shown a galaxy image. A series of questions will appear beneath them, and buttons for the answers you want to give. If you don't understand the question have a look at the tutorial for an explanation. If you touch a button image and hold down your finger the answer text it corresponds to will appear at the top of the screen. When you release your finger on a button you will give that answer to the question.
Each question leads on to a new question. Once you have exhausted all the questions you will be given a new galaxy to classify and your answers will be saved.
If you press the wrong button when classifying, you can tap the Undo button at the top right of the screen to go back and change your answer. You can also shake your iPhone to reset all the questions for your Galaxy.
If you answer the final question wrong for a galaxy, or if you later realise that you gave a wrong answer you won't be able to go back and change your answers, but don't worry. Your answers will be compared to those of other Galaxy Zoo users, so mistakes will be caught.
Tap this Info button at the top of the screen to get to the information screens. Here you can see how many galaxies are stored on your phone for you to classify. When you classify them all new ones will be downloaded for you, but if you want to build a stockpile (for example, if you will be leaving a WiFi hotspot) you can tap the "Stockpile!" button as many times as you like, and the app will download them ready for classification.
From the information screen (reached by tapping the info button at the top left of the main screen) you can also access some app options by tapping on the "Options" tab at the bottom of the screen. From here you can set whether the text of the answers appears at the top of the screen when you hold down your finger, and the default number of galaxies downloaded and saved.
From the information screen (reached by tapping the info button at the top left of the main screen) you can reach the copyright and privacy statements of Galaxy Zoo, by tapping the corresponding tab buttons at the bottom of the screen.
